You are directing a large part of the performance – be prepared.
Speak with the Toastmaster in advance to discover if there is a theme for the evening.
Decide if you would like to go with a theme or a selection of random topics, if you want to take them from current affairs or books, and if you want to use props. For help with this, try searching the web, reading The Toastmaster magazine or searching your house – some of the best topics sessions are those where the speakers are handed an object and asked to talk about it.
Prepare a range of topics so there are easier and harder ones you can use for advanced club members and guests for example.
Preparing a list of club members before you come along is very helpful.
Focus on including everyone attending the meeting so you need to spot who is there who doesn’t have a role assigned.
Speak to the guests in the break and see if any of them would like to tackle a topic.
When introducing the topic, explain what the person has to do before you tell us who you are choosing to perform.
Remember to lead the applause when the speaker finishes.
Thank everyone for their participation and hand back to the Toastmaster at the end.
